A few years ago, the craze was for the iPod and the MP3 player, portable digital devices which replaced the portable CD player. At around the same time, mobile phone manufacturers must have started thinking "There's a new market here"...thus the birth of the MP3 Mobile Phone.
Now, just about every notable manufacturer has made at least one of these phones. They combine the usefulness of the mobile phone with the entertainment value of the mp3 player, and most also have the integrated camera and video recorder which is standard on most handsets now.
Most MP3 phones tend to be of the 'slider' variety, with a couple of exceptions such as the Ericsson W950i and W960i, and the Nokia 5310. The younger sister to the 5310, the Nokia 5610 has not only the slider design, but also has a sliding bar on the front of the phone so you can easily switch between phone, MP3 player and radio. On most MP3 phones the music will cut out during a phone call automatically, and you can have the player on while doing other things on the phone like browsing the web or sending messages.
Most handsets come with minimum storage, depending on the model, but memory cards are quite cheap to buy. The MicroSD card starts at just over £10 from most phone stores, and comes in a 1GB, 2GB or 4GB size. The phones are set up so you can transfer music, videos and JPEGs directly from your PC by use of a cable, or Bluetooth if you have it on your PC.
So if you want an MP3 player and a mobile phone, and can't decide which to buy first, don't. Get a phone that thinks it's an MP3 player instead, and save money.
